Most of New York accepts a nationally recognised lifeguard certification and leaves it there. Nassau County does not: a guard working a pool under the county Department of Health's jurisdiction also needs a county-issued certificate — and the medical exam behind it expires on a different clock than the certificate itself.

Nassau's local layer is not about chemistry or retention — the state's Subpart 6-1 still governs those. It is about who is allowed to stand on your deck, and it creates a credential-tracking problem that a single expiry date cannot represent.
A national lifeguard certification is not sufficient on its own. Anyone employed as a lifeguard at a pool or beach under the county Department of Health's jurisdiction must also hold a current certificate issued by the Nassau County Department of Parks, Recreation and Museums.
Any person to be employed as a lifeguard at a bathing beach or swimming pool, under the jurisdiction of the Nassau Country Department of Health, must possess an appropriate current lifeguard certification issued by the Nassau County Department of Parks, Recreation and Museums.

The county certificate runs three years from issuance, and renewal is expected no later than one month after it expires. Miss that window and the guard is re-testing rather than renewing.

Grades IA, IB and IR cover swimming pools (IR being small pools and day camps); Grade II covers calm-water beaches and Grade III ocean beaches. A guard certified for one is not automatically cleared for another, so the grade matters as much as the date.

The Red Cross certification, the Nassau County certificate, and the medical examination all expire independently — at one, three, and one year respectively. A spreadsheet column called "cert expiry" cannot hold that.
A three-year county certificate outlives its underlying one-year medical exam by two renewals. The certificate can look current while the medical behind it is a year stale.
A Grade IA pool certificate is not a beach qualification. Where a department runs both pools and shoreline, the record has to carry which grade each guard holds, not merely that they hold something.

Yes, and it checks against the date of the shift rather than today's date — so a guard cannot be assigned to a July shift on the strength of a certificate that expires in June. That check is the reason the expiry dates have to be in the system rather than in a binder.
